Words from Randy

Randy

  • Feedback on SSC?

  • Tech demo discussion was interesting

    • Circumvents “PI Instrument” or “Visitor Instrument” process

    • Need to avoid using this as a way to circumvent facilitization costs

    • Luca: need clear definition of a facility instrument

    • Proposers have been warned that they need approval from WMKO to submit proposals

  • KPF Cadence Discussion

    • Team likely wants KPF to have small amounts of time on many nights

    • Email Andrew Howard directly with cc to John if you want to be on it

    • Carlos: similar to twilight observing, but no discretion

SSC: Strategic Plan

Randy

  • Randy: We will have role, but different than last time

  • John: trying not to create busywork. SAs should have real input, not just be notetakers.

TeamKeck

Luca

  • Deadline is April 9

  • Need allocation to Carolyn by May 3

  • Randy: we do reserve ToOs for TeamKeck. Well they are really for community (equivalent of DD time). 6 hours of interrupts available.

LRIS-R Commissioning Plan

Sherry, Marc, Percy

  • Arrives on April 6

  • Full schedule on spreadsheet

  • LRIS off sky on April 16 (warm red side dewar)

  • Install dewar in April 19

  • Engineering April 27-28, May 6 (all first half nights)

  • Luca: what about operational scripts (e.g. focus)?

    • WillD and Kyle have been working on adapting focus low level software to run on new machine. This is low level s/w not scripts.

    • Kyle will move software to new machine on 17th, but that is basic functionality of focus mechanism, not scripting.

    • Sherry: been trying scripts on linux VM

    • Luca: need to come up with list of needed scripts for going on sky.

    • Sherry: we have document

  • Randy: where do we put things so everyone can see it? Confluence.

  • Kyle: Solaris machine will still exist and will have keyword access to new detector

  • Are there access issues with the recent fall protection areas that were defined around cass?

  • Carolyn: do any SAs want/need fall training? Is scheduling for OAs, will send email.

  • Luca: how conservative/aggressive is schedule?

    • Marc: the previous (Mark-III) upgrade was done in just a couple days

    • Kyle: that change was purely detector hardware, so this is difference scope with software and computer architecture, first ARCONS controller.

    • Randy/Marc: could be noisier than lab (not uncommon), but don’t anticipate dramatic problems in first run

  • Kyle: first science is 7-15 (last eng is 6th)

  • Marc: shared slide presented at SSC meeting

  • Any changes to slit mask design? No immediate changes. No gap on red side which was the limiting factor (blue gap is smaller: 12” vs 30”).

  • No plan for project to deal with DRPs, but PypeIt will get modified

  • Readout is now 42 seconds vs. 200 seconds

  • Will not have windowing (deferred by project)

  • MIRA and SAT will still be on blue side due to mechanism move times

  • Connie is interested in studying what went wrong with current mosaic. Not funded, but is of interest.
