Words from Randy

Randy

  • Dwight is leaving, will be here until November 17th

    • What should we focus on before he leaves?

    • What is best staffing model after?

    • Josh: ask rest of engineering/instrument team if they are at least familiar with each instrument. If there are holes, have Dwight do training on that instrument.

    • Greg: figure out which procedures have only been done with Dwight

    • Randy: What are near term troubleshooting efforts (e.g. MOSFIRE CSU troubleshooting)? We may need to take lead.

    • Josh: LRIS-II team was made aware of Dwight’s departure this morning.

    • LRIS servicing mission: 2 key players (Jim Thorne and Dwight) now gone, so may be delayed?

    • Randy: Grant can play a strong role here as well

    • Randy: “We won’t be able to lean on Dwight the way we have”

    • Randy: plan is to hire to replace Dwight, which skillsets should replacement have

    • John: Can reset how we look at instrument support

      • Dedication to cross-training and documentation

      • This group should be more present on summit for a while

      • How should we organize an instrument team?

    • Dwight is on summit Wednesday and Thursday currently, working on docs other days

KOA updates

Chien-Hsiu

Carlos
  • Example codes/notebooks to download data

    • On KOA page on Keck instrument webpages

    • In “common” instrument pages

    • CHL will add to each instrument’s post-observing page if missing

  • Still some issues with the KOA RTI interface. There is a manual step at IPAC which is not 100% reliable.

  • Asking NexSci to provide API so we can query which observers have access and we can verify

  • John: we need to educate users about how this works, need for KOA account. We want to take away rsync/ssh access in the long term.

    • If you run in to KOA problem, night log it or get it sent to NexSci.

  • Guider images now archived in KOA

Nightlog/Daylog ticket formatting

    • Shui is already saving guider image every 2 minutes

    • Now all archived

    • Treated as proprietary

    • Not working for ToO programs

UNO transition plan

Carolyn

  • Transition starts maybe Jan 1

  • OAs act as if they are not at the summit

    • Two step process: OA tries to use cameras, then sends NA in to dome to compare results

    • May be additional overheads (transition period will probe this)

  • Jim: Is camera server blocking if others are logged in as well? Don’t want us to block critical checkouts.

  • Will be additional troubleshooting time done completely remotely before switching to a hands on solution (some OA discretion)

OA HQ hours/help on projects

Carolyn

  • As we move to UNO and because we have a full OA staff, OAs will have some HQ/daytime hours

  • If you have projects, including research, OAs are interested and available

2:21

Nightlog/Daylog ticket formatting

Carlos

  • Adding figures or formatting text (e.g. tables) is hard or impossible

  • Can/should we ask for upgrades?

  • Night log system does interpret some html tags

  • Could it be changed to all monospaced text? That would help.
