John

  • There are exciting instruments coming to the observatory in the next 5 years despite an awkwardly phrased bullet point in yesterday’s all staff.

  • May augment TK K1 poll by swapping with his time

  • Are there deferred maintenance topics which could be for instruments?

  • John will be on East coast in coming couple of weeks

Words from Randy

Randy

  • People Planner (P2) changes will be live on Monday

    • Summit duty schedule will now be via P2

    • Use that to get on ride board

    • Shows our night support

    • Jim: needs a commitment to fixing operational friction.

    • Jim: hover over should show office numbers at all locations (does this for WFH)

Team Keck observing time in 2023B update

Greg

  • TK meeting on Tuesday

  • Proposals for 23B are in

    • 7 proposals

    • K1 oversubscribed: 3.5 requested (1.5 allocated on K1)

    • K2: 1.5 requested (2 allocated on K2)

  • John can swap his half night on K1 for TK K2

  • Let John know if your K1 proposal could be on a K2 instrument

  • TK was not included in twilight policy

    • Currently there is a proposal for K1, but haven’t been executing due to RTC work

    • KPF not officially supported as twilight program in policy

NIRC2 Electronics Upgrade project update

Carlos

  • Replacing transputer with Archon controller

  • From cabinet to small box to control detector

  • Can swap back and forth by switching cables

  • New system supports additional modes including saving all reads

  • New control computer is ubuntu

  • Aborts are now possible

KPF commissioning status

Josh

  • Quick update on KPF status

    • First (non-cancelled) science night was this past Saturday. Have a science result from it already.

    • Showed GUIs

    • Still some work to be done on calibration sources

  • Randy: how does next semester look for HIRES vs. CPS

    • Carolyn: still some HIRES RV proposals

    • Carolyn: not many 1/4 night requests, even from CPS

Pyramid Update

Max

  • Mike Liu has 6 nights

  • Not very stable performance as far as image quality goes

  • Tuesday night and end of night, they got good results on latest changes, but unclear as it was last 1 hour of night and following night was weathered out

  • All without offsets, this was on axis

  • Clearly have issue with loop stability with reference slopes on DM

FY24 planning
  • Something is unstable which was not unstable in past

  • Next science is end of April for Pyramid (group may switch to SH WFS)

  • Will discuss strategy next week

  • Extinction was not good during most of this work

FY 24 Planning

Randy

  • 5 year plan has been mostly developed

  • Reflects strategic plan

  • Pragmatic approach to mid-term planning, with realistic funding expectations

  • Many FY23 projects are ending (e.g. KPF, KCRM)

  • UNO extended, but will be ramping down

  • Some labor available in FY24, so FY plan will include deferred maintenance, technical debt, Repair and Prepare (RaP)

  • If you have ideas for how to use resource on instruments, let's collect those and submit as a group. Jim will take lead.

  • Future meeting or process for this

  • Also CI projects will be in FY24

    • “small” projects (80-500 hours, ~$50k funds)

  • Randy will share large projects as we get closer to FY24

  • Kyle and Jeff have already been collecting software facing things for instruments

  • Jim: ok to have a long list

  • Randy: use next SA meeting

Morning Cals

Carolyn

  • How to know if observers are done with dome flats?

  • There is a keyword, there is a GUI for observers

  • Still operate under idea that if you’re on Zoom you are taking cals

  • Jim: could use RTI, if no image within X minutes (along with other criteria)

  • Jim: will try to intercept this at MASG if schedule seems likely to need morning cals
