The official procedure is here: https://www.keck.hawaii.edu/draw/CARA/9114/9114-CA3003.pdf the content below was the original source for that procedure.

SoCal has external latches to secure the lid in high winds. These are straightforward to operate and it should be doable by anyone who can access the roof.

  • If SoCal is currently open and operating, on a KPF machine, run kpfParkSoCal to halt operation.

    • To determine if SoCal is operating, run kpfIsSoCalShutDown on a KPF machine. It will print a status message (e.g. “SoCal is closed and parked”).

    • Alternatively, look at the camera inside the SoCal enclosure. It is listed as “Solar Calibrator” on the Facility Cameras page. Or can be accessed directly (on the internal network) here.

  • On a KPF machine, run kpfDisableSoCal to set a keyword which will disable automatic operations from starting.

  • Proceed to the roof and set both latches.

Please note: there is no need to toggle the local/remote switch in the SoCal electronics box, so there is no need to get the key for the e-box before going to the roof.
