Network Switches
Table of Contents:
Introduction
As shown in the Network Diagram, the layout philosophy was to have a network switch at each location to act as a ‘manifold’ for all of the ethernet devices at that location. This simplifies the cabling between locations as then there is only a single ethernet cable connecting each location to the KPF Main Switch.
Regardless of the number of devices at each location, 24-port switches were used throughout to simplify ordering, sparing, and maintenance/replacement.

Description | Qty | Source | Part Number |
---|---|---|---|
Network Switches | 6 | Aruba/HP | HP-2530-24G |
Fiber Ethernet SFP Adapters | 2 | Aruba/HP | Note the Archon fiber ethernet cables require an ‘SFP’ adapter to be inserted into two of the SFP ports on the KPF Main Switch. We tried generic SFP adapters at first but the Aruba 2530-24G switch would not recognize them. In the end we had to go with the (more expensive) Aruba/HPE adapter “Aruba 1G SFP LC SX 500m OM2 MMF Transceiver”, HPE Part# J4858D. |
Note the SoCal system uses a different switch as described here: https://keckobservatory.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KPFElectronics/pages/1540718596

Installation Instructions
NOTE: the switch is by default set up for DHCP. In this state the only way to connect to the switch to change any settings is via a console cable (as described below).
Once the switch has a static IP address set, you can connect to it for command-line sessions using PuTTy (using its static IP on port 22).
