    • have to come out near KSM? broader communication about KSM

    • what is purpose of newsletter?

    • timely announcements? instruments offline, etc.

    • can Mari-Ela help by collecting items and distributing?

SA Burden for Pajama Mode Setup

Luca

  • (See notes from prior discussions below)

  • Kyle: UCO has budget/hours for remote observing, that is a resource we can call on

  • Is PJ mode here to stay? In some form, probably? Would need clear effort from observatory leadership to close this door now that it is open.

  • How much of the concerns about PJ mode is the set up effort?

    • Still concerns about efficiencies

    • Don’t want to compromise science

  • What is short term solution?

    • Email to 20B PIs is going out soon. Should we be adding information / policies about remote observing?

  • Can we distribute firewall info and passwords and ingest SSH key via observer login page?

  •

12:42

ToO in era of Pajama Mode

  • Ask ToO observers to get set up now, not when they trigger

  • Other restrictions on whether ToOs get triggered?

    • No instrument changes?

    • Trigger must be in during the afternoon, not during the night

    •

12:49

Pau!

Action items

@Randy Campbell to ask for effort from software for help on setting up observers with pajama mode observing.
@Luca Rizzi ask HR for a new effort report code for this setup

Decisions

Pajamas mode considerations for discussion

  • PJ mode is here to stay, get used to it and let's come up with a plan to make it better (This is mostly Josh + software group + suggestions). In the short term, look for simple ways to simplify the process (i.e. reduce number of VNCs?)

  • Track your effort. Maybe we can ask HR to give us a specific effort code. Or we can collectively decide to use pre/post observing to specifically deal with observers setup

  • Work with management to find ways to distribute the load, without making any assumptions that other groups have free energy. No group has free energy to spend, but all the more reason to share the load instead of bearing it all on ourselves. One possible idea: use the swoc mechanism? It is a rotation system and it is compensated by the observatory at the same level as our night support

  • Diversity angle: these kind of considerations are long overdue
