Words from Randy

Randy

  • Team Keck

    • John says he is impressed with Team Keck proposals

    • John donated some of his Chief Scientist time

    • Oversubscribed on K1, under on K2

    • Confluence page showing awards is updated

  • Next Tuesday at lunch, Larissa will give lunch talk

  • Council

    • Thematic goal (focus for 3-4 months). Next will be 5 year plan.

    • 5 year plan neglected during COVID, so bringing it back

    • Strategic plan being finalized

    • Last goal was “retention”, still important

1:10

Mauna Loa Eruption

Randy

  • New closure parameters sent out

  • Changed particle count threshold down to 250, still a judgement call by OAs

  • Other criteria: humidity above 50% is unsafe now

  • Now have SO2 sensors, so may use those in criteria in future, but establishing baseline now. For now assume SO2 is present. They are handheld and portable. Want to get permanent ones to provide values to keywords.

  • CFHT particle sensor matches ours (both are inside dome)

  • We have new particle sensors from UNO (one in each dome), not accessible outside Keck network

  • Working with outside org who wants to install outdoor sensors, perhaps with wider sensitivity to other chemicals

  • Can be HF in volcanic fumes

  • Winds can kick up previously fallen material regardless of wind direction

1:32

UNO

Randy

  • Bob wanted to talk about instruments about checking and release of instruments.

  • Readiness board combines many conditions to provide an “ok to depart” status for day crew

    • Maybe some procedural checks, self checks?, status checks

  • Percy: LRIS for example needs observers to verify instrument config

  • Josh: procedural tasks should me managed on SIAS since they are already taken in to account for the departure screen

  • Guiders are in “no man’s land between instrument and telescope”

  • Percy: primary and standby instrument? Yes.

  • Kyle: we have EMIR running for several current systems

  • Liz is going to work on some sort of guider checkout under ops (not UNO)

  • Computer support has network monitoring tools which are not available to us, but may be in the future

1:55

HQ Power Outage

Josh

  • HQ power outage last night. Still no procedure. Needs rapid response in order to prevent computer rooms overheating.

  • Best if someone on site

2:03

Promoting teamwork and collaboration

Randy

  • Fewer gatherings in post-COVID world

  • How can we promote more teamwork on projects, more social interactions, etc.

  • Promote more TK collaborations

  • Science lunch talks? e.g. Larissa next Tuesday

  • Reinstate SA Coffee? With portable zoom station

  • Josh: How useful are software standup meetings?

    • Kyle: standup meetings are short and are about tactical awareness, not like this meeting which is more information dense

  • Problem with SA schedules, hard to find consistent times to work together which don't require constant adjustment

  • Kyle: how you chop up projects matters, is you avoid vertical integration in the project, you can promote interactions

  • Josh/Jim: do something akin to Marc’s KNIT meetings, but focussed only on SA tasks (not s/w team, not engineering)

  • Randy: have scheduled office day to promote hallway interactions?

2:29

K1 Shutter Status?

  • Being repaired, might be as soon as 2 weeks from now.

2:30

Pau!
