Words from John

John

  • FY26 is kicking off. Worked to guarantee resources for AO stability. It can be hardware, human resources, or software.

  • LRIS-2 PDR was last week. Some aspects will need an explicit response. There were no Tier 1 recommendations. It was a pass. If all goes well, it will delivered in 2027.

  • John to be traveling in the next few weeks to the NSF HQ, and also to DC, the NIKUG and SSC.

  • Virtual SSC meeting is May 16. Please, send John any instrument updates you may have.

Words from Jim

Jim

  • Pointing model will need to be refined in the next few nights.

  • Reminder to update the EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST for all instruments.

  • Josh and Rosalie to train her for mainland observing

  • Instrument reconfigurations?

  • Observers summit tours?

  • Help preparing rooms for lunchtime talks

  • VSQ reminders

  • Help setting up Zoom meetings

  • Put recordings of the science talks on line

  • Keeping SharePoint and Atlassian documentation organized

SA Discussion

All

4 of 5 have visited. There may be a 2-week delay for #5. We have two positions--can we start going on one? Please bring your feedback and recommendations.

  • Our needs are mostly on night support, particularly AO support. Also needs on software support will increase with new instruments and taking ownership of pipelines.

  • More observational experience would have been desired from the candidates. Ideal candidate would have been an ex-SA.

  • Slight higher emphasis was put into candidates with instrumentation experience than with purely academic background.

  • Experience from the summit visit was a bit mixed.

  • We may need to look for a candidate with a more traditional astronomy background.

  • We will make an offer to one of the candidates. Then we may consider to go back to the pool of current candidates to add a sixth candidate to the short list. Ultimately, we may consider to advertise the job again, if needed.

Planning for Students and scholars

All

Randy is curious how the KVSP is shaping up and what summer students , interns, etc. we are expecting:

  • Michael still has a High School student

  • No Akamai students

  • There are 4 KVS. One is in AO this year. Percy has two this year, and Rosalie will have one next year.

Percy thinks it would be good to know well in advance the windows available to bring the students here in advance.
