Words from Jim

Jim

  • Self-eval form out, due Sept 10 (to HR)

  • Pier repair starts Sunday

    • Greg and Grant from our group will be pulled in to Pier Repair

    • Need to shift some support nights

  • Shutter work ongoing

    • Not learning when we’ll be back to computer control. Still parking at 55.

    • Lots of light leaks at this park position.

    • Maybe because they're not letting the shutters touch?

    • Any work planned for K1 shutter?

      • Had been speed imbalance faults, resolved.

      • Top shutter fault last night will be looked at.

      • K1 shutter can be tensioned in two locations, so easier. Wire ropes are thinner on K1.

    • Some chatter about additional wire rope replacements on K2. Not scheduled.

      • May use some of the pier repair contractors

      • Lots of questions about this process and schedule and how it might affect observing

    • Jim recommends that we start talking to community (i.e. at KSM) about shutdowns.

      • e.g. Still have K2 dome drive issues, last gearbox change was difficult.

  • HS student

    • Original job description is for a data science lean

    • Do we have other projects?

    • Would work limited time during school year, more in summer

Switch Upgrade Checkout

  • Sept 4 (Thursday)

  • Email from Jeff about recovery planning

  • Josie and Matt will be at summit at 6am to get handoff from OAs and will commence work

  • That night is engineering (PCS), prior night is split and there will be no morning cals

  • What traffic will go away during work?

    • Not clear yet

  • Kyle: assume all connections will be interrupted, possibility for shenanigans on all networks

Instrument Champions

Jim

  • How best to ensure instruments are ready?

  • Under UNO need to ensure instruments are ready to go.

  • Jim submitted ECR for intermediate check on SIAS

    • Instrument Release to SA

    • Instrument Checked out (meant for SA to do)

    • Telescope Release

  • Not going to check out standby instruments

    • Concern is that support techs check out standby first, then on sky delaying release

  • ToO instruments need to get marked as required for the night

  • Also need to be disciplined about marking offline instruments at not available (for ToOs)

  • Automated checkout should be an option

  • Magiq troubleshooting, is that us or SWOC?

    • We get first call.

  • Timeline for new release system?

    • Tied to UNO

2:00

Revive SA Coffee?

Josh

  • Twice per week

  • Tuesday and Thursdays at 2pm

  • Snacks using morale money?

  • @Josh Walawender Ask Erika to make calendar entry

  • In person, not hybrid

2:04

SA Lunch

All

  • Money left in morale fund

  • Have ~$25-30 per person left

  • Lunch before next SA meeting? Project like last year (lego galaxies)?

  • Lunch out on 11th before this meeting? Merrimans

    • @Rosalie McGurk to make reservation

2:12

Evolving Instrument Accounts & Conking

Josh

  • How do we want to use numbered accounts going forward?

    • KPF only uses kpf1 in practice

    • Less need for conking?

    • More split nights

  • SCALES will use AD accounts

  • VNC checkouts using another account are convenient
