AO Tips and Tricks

LGS Procedures

In general, the PI submits a starlist using the PI login webpage at least 5 working days before the observing. No bulk submissions are possible and the PI shoulld upload one starlist per night. This starlist can be processed in two ways:

  • using a webpage. This method uses a webpage to manage and process the starlists semi-automatically. This method should be used if there is a single user for the night (either a science PI or an engineering PI) who has submitted a single starlist. This procedure also assumes that a set of engineering stars will be added. Note that this method also allows to merge more than two submitted starlists. The scripts append both a create a single starlist that is processed and creates the two PMR files. It will also adds ToO targets. These targets have to be added by hand to the /home/kics/starlists/k1ToO.list and /home/kics/starlists/k1ToO.list (edit both file sif teh ToO requests access to both).

  • using a manual processing. This is the backup procedure that should be used if the webpage is down or in the following cases:

    • Additional targets to be added after processing the list.

For completeness, processing means that a starlist is converted into a PRM (Pointing Request Message) file that is to be submitted to the Laser Clearing House (LCH https://www.space-track.org/auth/login ) for deconfliction. The LCH will send us a PAM (Program Approval Message) file with the closure times. If we do not receive the PAM file by 4:00pm then the SA would need to contact LCH and the PI to report the delay. The final step is to process the PAM file by preparing closures file for the night and send closure files to the OA and night observers. This last step can be done manually or with the webpage. For LGS, the date is the UT date and for communicating with LCH use the JDAY (https://www.longpelaexpertise.com.au/toolsJulian.php).

Where to find them?

Please use the following links for the two methods:

Communications

There are several emails that have been setup to remind SAs of upcoming runs, inform the LGS users of available starlists and PRM and PAM files, inform the MK community about laser activity. The following is a table listing them. In this context, the spacemail distribution list includes all AO SAs, L. Fuhrman, and S. Wakamatsu.

K1 OPERATIONS

Daytime Cals

There is an updated calibration procedure on the AO webpage for daytime KAPA cals. Please be aware of the following when running K1 cals:

There are two modes for osiris: imaging and spectroscopy

Nighttime Operations

For KAPA acquisitions:

It is possble that a manual alignment of the laser beam is needed. Please use this Link to K1 M3 camera
