  • New title name to replace instrument master. To keep in mind, for the discussion, the current definition:

The position of “Instrument Master” is an honor bestowed on Support Astronomers at Keck when they have demonstrated complete mastery of a facility instrument. The role of master asserts the SA has full responsibility for a particular instrument.  The Master has authority for making decisions that could impact the operation and performance of the instrument.  Mastership responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Providing overall leadership for maintaining and improving scientific operational readiness on a routine basis

Supporting science and engineering observations

Providing leadership and direction for preventive and predictive maintenance 

Coordinating efforts with technical and administrative experts on hardware  and software issues

Leading multidisciplinary teams to accomplish technical tasks

Coordinating efforts with the mainland institutions,  the PI, and the instrument team for ongoing support of minor projects and major upgrades

Developing a strategy for future enhancements and avoiding obsolescence

Supporting and/or leading proposal generation for project funding

Optionally, using the instrument for scientific and/or technical research.
