Additional information
A power glitch or power cycling the DEIMOS rotator Galil controller trips the cradle interlock. The only way to recover is to physically toggle the cradle breaker in the rotator power panel next to the cradle Bay B (Over-temperature Cut-out AC Box). This behavior needs to be addressed to make DEIMOS UNO ready.
Facility power glitches can trip the DEIMOS rotator E-Stop which cuts power to the rotator motor. The only way to recover from the E-Stop is to have a person physically press the green reset button located in the DEIMOS cradle Bay C per DEIMOS rotator controller E-stop recovery procedure. Arguably, a person physically next to DEIMOS to recover from an E-stop is desirable for safety reasons, but we should be aware that a facility power glitch on a DEIMOS observing night without personnel on the summit will require sending someone to the summit to press the DEIMOS E-stop reset button.
All four components in the DEIMOS cradle can be connected to an 8-port PDU to be installed in Bay D. A power cable for the autofill controller would need to be routed from Bay A to be D. There is already a power cable from the rotator controller in Bay C to Bay D.
Theres is already an 8-port PDU installed in the DEIMOS electronics ring Bay 11. This PDU is in the DEIMOS private network controller via the
deipower
keyword service. Four of the ports are currently used for the two ion pump controllers, D-Link network switch, and 10base2 to RJ45 converter. The remaining PDU ports can potentially be used to plug in the two Galil 1500 motion controllers in Bays 1 and 11 respectively, the PI piezo controller in Bay 2, and the barrel Lantronix terminal server in Bay 3.It is not clear if keeping the current ThinNet private network is the best way forward for UNO and the upcoming DEIMOS detector upgrade. We may need to submit a Continuous Improvement project to replace the current ThinNet infrastructure with either fiber or copper Ethernet.
If we do not add a second PDU to the DEIMOS electronics ring, there will be 3 devices left without PDU power control: science CCD controller power supply and shutter controller in Bay 8, and FCS CCD controller in Bay 10.
Based on the information above, two additional 8-port PDUs, one in cradle Bay D and one in the electronics ring will be needed to make DEIMOS ready for UNO. A potential location for the electronics ring PDU is Bay 10 where the current FCS CCD controller is located. Space seems a bit tight now, but rack rails are already available. The location is appropriate to plug in the FCS CCD controller, and the science CCD controller power supply and shutter controller in Bay 8. Besides, the FCS CCD controller will be removed in a year with the DEIMOS detector system upgrade, which will fully free the space in Bay 10.
Addressing power cuts due to cradle interlocks
Based on the PDU installation work performed between March 10 and 13, 2024, an additional PDU needs to be installed in cradle Bay A to address the Over-temperature Cut-out AC Box behavior.
Additionally, relays will need to be installed in parallel to the Over-temperature Cut-out AC Box in Bay B and Rotator Interlock Box in Bay C. These relays will be plugged into one of the cradle PDUs to enable optional remote interlock reset.
Impact of future DEIMOS detector system upgrade
The DEIMOS detector system will be upgraded during the first quarter to FY25 (DEIMOS Throughput Upgrade - DTU). The new detector system will bring the following changes:
Only one ion pump controller instead of two. This will free one of the outlets in the PDU that is currently installed in the electronics ring Bay 11.
Only one CCD controller for both the FCS and science CCDs. The new CCD controller can potentially be plugged in the freed outlet in the electronics ring Bay 11.
Hexapod controller. Internal instrument focus and partial flexure compensation will be provided by an hexapod. The controller will be placed in the DEIMOS electronics ring.
The DTU will eliminate some of the current devices that need to be connected to PDUs but will also add new devices. Therefore, the two additional 8-port PDUs mentioned in the previous section will also be needed for the DTU.
