TRICK target acquisition

TRICK target acquisition

Below are the steps to acquire targets in the TRICK mode.
Note that the overhead of TRICK target acquisition is significantly higher than the STRAP mode overhead.

Instructions

First Steps

  1. In AOAcq, load starlist and check target name, mR, B-V, dRA, dDec, as usual.

  2. In AOAcq AO Mode, select LGS-TRICK or NGS-TRICK.
After an AO mode is selected, you should see that ROI info is updated, and Switch to IRTT
    becomes available.

PO Selection and Setup Bench
Brace yourself now. PO selection depends on whether observations are done in the spectroscopic or imaging mode, and which science filter is required.

  1. In the spectroscopic mode,

    • For H band science, select K-OSPEC, because K band light is used for TRICK.

    • For K band science, select H-OSPEC, because H band light is used for TRICK.

  2. In the imaging mode,

  • For H band science, select K-OSIMG

  • For K band science, select H-OSIMG

3. Click Setup Bench.
This will take about 2 minutes to complete.

Setup bench does the following:

Send the TRICK dichroic to H-band or K-band
Set the TRICK filter to H or Ks, according to the dichroic setting
Set the focus position to the selected TRICK dichroic + filter position
Update Trick ROI pixel position (x,y)
Load a Trick cog file, e.g. 24OSIRIS-L2x2_trick.cog

Acquire Star with TRICK Full Frame

Brace yourself again. The overhead is high to acquire star in the TRICK full frame mode.

  1. After setup bench is completed, click Acquire star.
This will take about 30 seconds to complete.

    Acquire star does the following:

Record background for WFS and STRAP
(Record background for TRICK???)
Check STRAP magnitude
Close DT sensor loop on STRAP
Set LBWFS configuration
Close DM loop

2. Examine the image in TRICK GUI, see if IRTT is near the center of ROI.

There is a good chance that the IRTT star is not in the ROI in the first round.
In such case we will have to take a full frame TRICK image to identify
the star and recenter it in ROI.

3. In TRICK GUI, click FULL FRAME. It will take 40 seconds to complete the imaging,
and another window will pop up displaying the full frame TRICK image of the field.

Note: Only click it once. Multiple clicks will result in TRICK taking
and displaying full frame images multiple times. The overhead penalty adds up very quickly.

4. Identify and click on the IRTT star in the full frame image. Only click once.
Wait for another window to pop up and show the zoomed in image.

5. In the zoomed in image, click on the star to recenter it in the ROI.
This window then will disappear, and we should see the star in the center of ROI
in the TRICK GUI. The image of the star and the count level plot should be updating.
Now the TRICK GUI is in the vedio mode.

6. In AOAcq, click Switch to IRTT, wait for the loops to close.
TODA status should be green.

7. Once the observer is satisfied with the centering of IRTT, in AOAcq click Offset to target.

Acquire Star without TRICK Full Frame

When IRTT lands near the center of ROI in the first round, we do not need to use
the full frame mode.

  1. Following Step 3B, after the bench is set up and IRTT is near the center of TRICK ROI,
click Switch to IRTT in AOAcq, wait for all the loops to close.
    TODA status should be green.

  2. Once the observer is satisfied with the centering of IRTT, in AOAcq click Offset to target.
