Calibration Bench Shutter Controllers
Table of Contents:
Introduction
Five Uniblitz VED24 shutter controllers are located underneath the Calibration Bench, each of which powers and controls a Uniblitz DSS25B bi-stable shutter.
Four of the shutters and controllers are described here, with the fifth described within Flat Field Fiber System (Wide Flat).
The controllers are placed underneath the Calibration Bench to be in close proximity to their shutters: two shutters are placed within the Calibration Unit enclosure (the Cal Sci/Sky Arm and Simult. Cal shutters), and the other two are placed beside the Calibration Unit enclosure (the SoCal Sci Fiber and SoCal Cal Fiber shutters).
The shutter trigger pulses are generated by the Shutters and Timing Galil.

Installation Instructions
The settings below must only be used for the DSS25B shutter, or damage will result. |
The shutter controller has a set of DIN “Function Switches” (second from right in image below) and an Octal switch for “Pulse Duration” (far right in image below) that need to be configured for the particular shutter being used:
The function switch has the following settngs:
For the DSS25B shutters the function switch and pulse duration settings are:
Note the setting for Switch 1 does not depend on the shutter type, but should be set to ‘UP’ for ‘LOCAL’ (this disables the USB port and enables the BNC Pulse Input):
Note also that there is also a toggle switch on the front that sets the ‘Normally Open’ or ‘Normally Closed’ polarity of the switch (second from left in image above). The manual is not clear on how this affects a bi-stable shutter. For consistency within KPF, all shutter controllers should be set to ‘N.O.’. Each KPF VED has a label on the front to indicate this, as show in the picture above.
To manually operate a shutter, one can click the N.O./N.C. switch back and forth. However, be sure to leave it at ‘N.O.’ when done.
