Jim

  • SA schedule ready?

    • No objections

    • Will be put on schedule soon

  • PFS online

    • Science operations in Feb

  • External access, alwaysDeployed

    • Josie is looking to migrate external collaborators to vpn2 (requires Keck account and MFA)

    • Jim also wants to look at KRO always deployed observers. Needed for DEIMOS slit mask design (no longer needed, but LRIS still does). Will start removing those and wait for screaming.

  • Pier Repair Review

    • Passed review yesterday.

    • Concerns about labor availability, but now have more people than in last email.

  • Recruiting update

    • SA applications coming in. More than 50 applicants, not all qualified.

    • Same panel as before. (Rosalie, Randy, Jim)

    • Folks at AAS now are recruiting.

  • 25B engineering time due 27th

    • See email from Carolyn

    • Need this for CFP which goes out first week of February

  • Rosalie: SCALES coming in October still?

    • Ping Marc

  • Mike: projects impacted by LA fires?

    • Probably SCALES and HISPEC a bit

    • Need to confirm for NIRSPEC service

    • KCWI CCRs delayed (but already delayed)

  • Rosalie: Chief Engineer?

    • There are applicants, but Jim not on panel, so not sure details.

keanahaki retirement

Jim

IT wants to shut down keanahaki. Need to verify crons can be on different server

  • keanahaki = hqcronserver != vm-hqcronserver

  • Some tasks should be ported, some can be retired

  • Jim will be pinging people to help track down crons

  • IT would like to turn off all physical solaris machines

  • Solaris containers can still exist (e.g. kapoho/xserver1)

Pier Repair Activities

Jim

Are there tasks to be done while not on-sky w/ K1?

  • Shutdown is ~1.5 months

  • We have tended to specialize in K1 or K2, some of us will see K2 for the first time in a long time.

  • Pier repair is still looking for more people, so AJ and Danny might be pulled, so we could fill in on some instrument tasks.

  • PR team is acutely aware that K2 will still be on sky

  • Should instruments be covered in plastic to protect them?

  • There is a return to science concept that we will need to contribute to

    • e.g. snowing primary? cleaning instruments?

    • HBS health after being off for extended period

  • Running the ACs warm as a dehumidifier

    • but particulate counts spike when ACs on

  • During test run, it took a week to settle out the pointing. Probably concrete cooling time.

  • Josh: need to think about cooling for multiple days before going on sky to equalize thermal masses

  • Jim: 2020 had a long shutdown which we can look at for experience

  • Exercise dome and shutters during pier repair?

    • Use open shutters for air flow?

  • Josh: pull secondary and store in mirror barn? Put First Contact over some optics? Pull or cover tertiary?

  • Dome might get warm, does this affect glycol cooling of instruments?

    • Glycol might have to be warmer than usual

    • AO OCAM2k is ok with glycol up to 35C!

  • LRIS will be in Cass (nominally)

  • Should we pull it (especially if secondary is out)

  • Dome clean room will be partially disassembled
