Words from Randy

Randy

  • Happy to have attended Keck Science Meeting

    • Andrea’s plenary was particularly good

    • First time doing plenary talks

    • John: lots of positive feedback on plenaries

    • Will do in future, probably not as many since not Keck 30th

    • Attendance numbers about average registration, but several no-shows

1:27

Words from John

John

  • FY24 planning is closing out final details

  • John is on sky tomorrow, will give last hour of night to NIRES DDOI testing

  • Shadow the scientist is also happening in John’s time

  • John away all next week (NASA Ames, Lockheed, Ball), but will be in contact

  • Visited Roman hardware which was fun

  • Randy: what influence will Euclid have on Keck science?

    • There was a big spectral survey at Keck as a precursor for Euclid

    • Launch in July

    • Probably be transient follow up which will come our way (ToOs)

    • Impact after early results in future semesters

    • Euclid is more tailored, narrower science focus, less general science. Not NASA mission (ESA).

  • Roman launch later 26 or early 27

Director Search

Randy

  • Committee has completed first round of interviews

  • Evaluating candidates

  • Will send short list and send report to board

  • Board then takes over process, likely to be delay due to board schedules until mid to late October

  • May or may not be on site interviews, not clear. Depends on board and whether some candidates want confidentiality

  • Committee’s work is wrapping up, may be involved if there is an on-site process

  • Not sharing details of short list, not number or names

LRIS testing

Percy

  • CI for instrument checks

  • LRIS on RIM (Remote Instrument Monitoring)

    • mechanism failures

    • configuration errors

    • software issues

  • Check all mechanisms, configurations, and software every day

    • log results and show to support tech

  • Will take ~30-40 minutes

  • Each instrument will have a keyword indicating if it is ok for day crew to leave.

    • This is an AND combination of a bunch of status values

1:57

MOSFIRE CSU Issues

Percy

  • Observing with alignment masks is difficult to reduce in DRPs

  • Josh: all decision here are tradeoffs in risk vs science impact

  • Consult with Josh or Chien-Hsiu is you have questions

  • Josh can help consulting with observers

  • Chen-Hsiu has actually observed through a fatal error mask which was in an alignment mask position

2:12

Other CI Projects

Randy

  • New one from Sherry for redesign of mechanism (OSIRIS)

2:12

Firewall Upgrade

Josh

  • Possible firewall change is imminent, high risk to remote observing

  • Could become a problem suddenly if the original schedule is used, but will likely be delayed because remote observing is a challenge to the new system

  • Just an FYI to make everyone aware

2:17

[instr]_help email addresses

Rosalie

  • [instr_info]@keck are used

    • Includes summit folks

  • Suggest [instr]_help for observers

    • Keeps summit folks off of observing questions

  • Josh: consider using Jira Helpdesk similar to remote observing

2:29

Pau!

  • Next meeting Sept 28

  • Lead: Rosalie
